In 2001, Argentina suffered a dramatic political and economic crisis which plunged more than half the country’s population into poverty. While the country has left the worst of the crisis behind, Argentineans continue to feel the effects.

Argentina’s children and youth make up more than 30% of the population. Almost a quarter of these children live below the poverty line. Although 99% of children go to primary school in Argentina and 87% go to secondary school, dropout rates are as high as 10%. Infant and child mortality rates are 89% higher than those of Cuba.

Argentina currently faces significant challenges as it works to improve the quality of life of its population, especially its children.

What we do

  • We helped introduce and fund a social protection policy that provides subsidies to help children whose parents are unemployed or work in informal jobs reach their educational goals
  • We helped extend this social protection policy from 3.5 million children to pregnant women
  • In Argentina we are also members of the Civil Society Consultative Group for the Inter-American Development Bank Representative Office where we promote policies and programs that improve lives of the children and youth
