Ethiopia

Children in Ethiopia are growing up in one of the world’s poorest countries. More children under the age of five die here than in most other countries. Under-five mortality rates are amongst the highest in the world at 109 deaths per 1000 children born. More than 35 million people live in poverty (44% of the population).

What we do

Save the Children Canada has been working in Ethiopia since 1997. Our work there focuses on:

  1. Removing barriers to development to address chronic poverty, hunger and malnutrition
  2. Preventing/reducing the spread of HIV and AIDS
  3. Fostering equality between women and men
  4. Supporting livelihood programs to combat high unemployment rates

Save the Children leads a consortium of Canadian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) engaged in a five-year project that aims to improve food security in Benishangul Gumuz, the regional state bordering Sudan. This project is helping strengthen the ability of communities and the Government of Ethiopia to support economic growth. By focusing on livelihoods generated from agricultural work, which 85% of the population is engaged, Save the Children-led consortium is taking an innovative approach in addressing the challenges facing agricultural producers in the region, including Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and preparing vulnerable communities for natural disasters and thereby lessen the impact of emergencies. At the same time, this project weaves gender-equality and natural resource management into all activities.

To achieve lasting change, Save the Children works directly with local organizations and all levels of government. We also engage children and youth as active players in the development of initiatives in line with their rights, as outlined in the approach of our founder, Eglantynne Jebb, and formalized as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
